Pro Bono Opportunities

Volunteering pro bono at the Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York, Inc. is a great way to make a difference in the lives of low-income people, seniors, victims of violence and others who can’t afford legal help when they need it most.

Volunteer lawyers from throughout our service area help us to continue meeting our clients’ needs, even as funding for civil legal services continues to decline.

How Do Our Pro Bono Lawyers Serve the Public Good?

In 2008, volunteer private attorneys with our Private Attorney Involvement program closed 506 cases, contributing a total of 900 hours toward representation of indigent clients.

How Do I Sign Up?

If you would like to do pro bono work, please contact one of our pro bono coordinators:

Arlene Sanders (Binghamton office) (607) 231-5900
Jim Guilford (Syracuse office) (315) 475-3127
Renee Kolwaite (Utica office) (315) 793-7061

Pro bono lawyers from throughout our 13-county service area are welcome. We provide free CLE credit in exchange for pro bono hours.

What Kinds of Pro Bono Help Do We Need?

We need pro bono lawyers who are willing to:

  • provide advice and counsel or legal representation to individual clients
  • staff pro bono clinics
  • provide training for our staff on important legal issues

Lawyers with any type of legal expertise are welcome, but we have a particular need for lawyers who specialize in bankruptcy, divorces, housing and elder law. Right now, we have a critical need for pro bono lawyers to take simple bankruptcy cases.
