The Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York (LASMNY) provides a comprehensive range of free civil legal services to low-income individuals and families across 13 counties in Central New York.
Direct Legal Services
- Family Law: divorce, domestic violence, child custody, child abuse/neglect
- Housing: eviction defense, landlord-tenant issues, foreclosure prevention, housing conditions
- Income Maintenance/Public Benefits; Social Security Disability (SSD), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), emergency assistance, HEAP
- Consumer/Finance: identity theft, utility shut-offs, debt collection defense
- Employment: wage theft, workplace discrimination, unsafe working conditions
- Immigration: citizenship assistance, visa issues, human trafficking cases
- Health Law: Medicaid and Medicare issues
- Personal Planning: wills, health care proxies, powers of attorney
- School/Education: financial aid, access to education issues
Other Services
- Central New York Legal HelpLine: The telephone HelpLine is a joint project with LASMNY's non-LSC twin, Legal Services of Central New York (LSCNY), and it serves as the primary point of entry for new clients to both agencies. It provides telephone advice, brief service, and referrals on civil legal matters. To access the toll-free HelpLine, call 877-777-6152.
- Community Legal Education: LASMNY staff members regularly present workshops on a variety of civil legal topics to community partners and client-eligible groups. Topics covered include tenant rights, the warranty of habitability, SSI/SSD eligibility, and child and spousal support guidelines.
