  • A landlord cannot penalize you for seeking emergency assistance, such as terminating or refusing to renew your lease.

  • You can obtain an order of protection from a family court judge, which prohibits the abuser from threatening, abusing, or acting violently towards you, and may require the abuser to stay away from you, your children, your home, your pets, and your job.

  • If you are in danger, you can request a temporary order of protection right away from a judge, your local criminal court, or town justice if family court is not in session.
